Happy Memorial Day 2010: They Do It Because of 2 Words
Why do some Americans answer the military call and fight for our freedom?

They Do It Because of 2 Words
by J. Lamar Ferren
- When they persevere though the verbally harsh words & physical demands of boot camp
They do it because of 2 words - When they’re morale is low and they begin questioning their decision, then they snap back to reality in order to protect our freedom.
They do it because of 2 words - When they leave their entire family behind to step onto the battlefield.
They do it because of 2 words - When they seem to have a normal life for 1 or 2 years and then suddenly have to leave their family behind again to step onto the battlefield again.
They do it because of 2 words - When they fight 12 months+ in a Foreign Country where the locals tell them they’re not wanted there…and then they still decide to stay and fight.
They do it because of 2 words - When they don’t understand why some missions take place and others don’t…They still fight.
They do it because of 2 words - When a normal day is riding through the desert with the threat of IEDs (Improvised Explosive
- Devices), Small Arms Fire Attacks, RPG Attacks, Vehicle Bomb Attacks and much more.
They do it because of 2 words - When they get injured and come home for medical care, they think about their comrades and say, “Doc, how soon can I get back over there”
They do it because of 2 words - When someone gets killed right in front of their eyes, they don’t run away…they continue to fight unless ordered otherwise.
They do it because of 2 words - When they have to bury their fellow brothers and sisters in arms and continue the fight…
They do it because of 2 words - When that recruiter comes around to your front door to ask for you or your children to join the military…
They do it because of 2 words
It’s 2 words that declare our freedom. 2 words that allow us to enjoy the life that we live. 2 words that allow us to come together for a Memorial Day BBQ celebration. 2 words that make it okay for us to walk around without any real worries.
Those 2 words are…
The OATH
The oath is what declares our freedom. It’s a commitment that every service member must take. It’s doesn’t matter if they’re in the U.S Army, The U.S Marines, The U.S Navy, The U.S Air Force, or The U.S Coast Guard.
They all must take…THE OATH
Regardless of the paid college tuition, cool health care plan, job security, and all the other military perks…It’s THE OATH that keeps them fighting.
There are some who serve part time, some who serve full time, and some who serve until they retire.
Regardless of the path they choose, they must all take the oath and keep it until their term ends.
So why does this Oath have such a stronghold on our military. Why does it remind every service member what their true mission is, regardless of why they initially joined. Even during the Revolutionary War, service members had to take the oath
Let me ask you this…If you had to utter the words below and mean it from the bottom of your heart, wouldn’t you keep your word?
Oath of Enlistment
“I, [YOUR FULL NAME HERE], do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice. So help me God.”
God Bless America and Have a Happy Memorial Day!
Sincerely,
